It is a worn out cliché that major tournaments act as the perfect shop window for footballers to earn a big-money move, but for Wales’ Hal Robson-Kanu, he just needed any move after Euro 2016.
The striker arrived in France as part of Chris Coleman’s 23-man squad, but without a club having run his contract at Reading down to its conclusion.
He hoped to find himself a new home upon completion of the summer tournament, but has seen his popularity go through the roof after his superb solo strike against Belgium in the quarter finals.
Premier League outfits like Swansea and Hull, as well as clubs from around the world, have reportedly made contact to sign the 27-year-old, whose only decision now seems to be picking from the many suitors scrambling for his signature.
In reality the choice should be quite easy, with defending top-flight champions Leicester among those in line to sign the Welshman.
A side expected to fight at the sharp end of the table, who will also compete in the Champions League, is an attractive proposition for any player, but the fit between the Foxes and Robson-Kanu goes beyond status and ambition.
On the pitch, the two parties should be a match made in heaven, with the striker similar in profile to many of the Football League heroes that helped Claudio Ranieri stun the country with last season’s success.
As well as fitting in with the club’s unheralded ethos, Robson-Kanu has shown himself to be an extremely effective defensive striker for Wales at Euro 2016.
Closing down from the front with tireless running and work rate was key to Leicester’s gameplan last season and with European football now also on the club’s plate, they’ll need a rotation policy to keep the squad fresh.
Robson-Kanu scored seven goals in 25 Premier League games with Reading during the one campaign the Royals spent in the top-flight and, with the Arsenal youth product open in his ambitions to have another crack at the division, Leicester could be his perfect chance to do so.
