Champions League: Pep and Manchester City to face Barcelona and Messi

Published:

Pep Guardiola will face his old club Barcelona after Manchester City were drawn against the Spanish giants in the Champions League group stage.

The Citizens were the last name picked out of pot 2, and that left them heading into Group C alongside the club Pep both played for and managed to immense success.

City will also face Borussia Monchengladbach and Celtic, but all eyes will be on those two contests versus Lionel Messi and co.

The sides have met in the last-16 of both the 2013-14 and 2014-15 campaigns, with Barca winning both legs on each occasion.

Ladbrokes Premiership champions Celtic will be no strangers to Barca either, having met the La Liga side eight times in recent years.

Hoops fans will already be reminiscing over that famous 2-1 win at Parkhead in 2012, and wondering if boss Brendan Rodgers’ can instill himself in Celtic folklore by leading his side to another famous European success.

Meanwhile Leicester will face 2004 champions Porto after being drawn against the Portuguese giants side in Group G.

The reigning Premier League champions will also come up against Club Brugge and FC Copenhagen, as Claudio Ranieri’s charges prepare for a first ever campaign in Europe’s top club competition.

On paper it’s not a bad draw for the Foxes, with Porto winning just three of their last 16 Champions League games against England opponents.

Leicester went into the draw in Monaco as top seeds, therefore avoiding the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain.

Tottenham drew CSKA Moscow, Bayer Leverkusen and AS Monaco in what looks like a favourable Group E for Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

The draw marks an amazing turnaround for those three English sides, who as recently as the 2003-04 season all finished in the bottom half of the Premier League.

Champions League regulars Arsenal have been plonked in Group A alongside PSG, FC Basel and Bulgarian side Ludogorets.

Elsewhere, Juventus and Sevilla will meet in Group H, while Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Sporting Lisbon make up a thrilling trio in Group F alongside Legia Warsaw.

European heavyweights Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid will clash in Group D.
