Could Swansea secure stunning deal for Man United defender?

With Everton having snapped up Swansea City’s defensive rock Ashley Williams earlier this week, Swans boss Francesco Guidolin is on the hunt for a new centre-back and rumour has it he may be planning a move for Manchester United’s Marcos Rojo.

The Argentine international has struggled at Old Trafford since his £17m move from Sporting Lisbon in 2014.

While there is little doubt of his natural ability, a series of high-profile mistakes have left the United faithful – and allegedly Jose Mourinho – unimpressed, and the 26-year-old looks set for an exit from Manchester, with the Swans emerging as contenders for his signature.

With a likelihood of a first-team spot should he join the South Wales outfit, the promise of minutes on the field could be a big motivator for a man who featured in just 16 Premier League games at Old Trafford last season – though injury did play a part in some of those absences.

However, an injury-free and confident Rojo would be a fantastic addition to a Swansea defence which shipped 52 goals in last season’s Premier League, and conceded three or more goals in eight matches in all competitions.

And the money needed to prise the former Spartak Moscow man away from Old Trafford is available to Guidolin, following the sales of Williams and Andre Ayew for an estimated grand total of £32.5m.

Swansea begin the season with a trip to newboys Burnley, with 21/10 for the visitors to win on the opening day for the first time since 2014.

Meanwhile, it’s 4/1 for the Swans to finish in the top half of the Premier League for the second time in three seasons. If they can fill their defensive void with a Copa Libertadores winner, that price could look incredibly generous indeed.
