Man United interest spells immediate danger for Arsenal target

We’re just one week into the new Premier League campaign, and the images of angered Arsenal fans outside the Emirates are already starting to spread across the Internet like wildfire. Their side’s lack of activity in this summer’s transfer market has been a concern for fans and pundits alike.

And while a move for Valencia centre-half Shkodran Mustafi appears to have hit a stumbling block, the latest player to be linked with a move to North London is Southampton defender and Euro 2016 winner Jose Fonte.

But before Gunners fans breathe a sigh of relief knowing that help is on its way, it’s worth noting that a certain Mr Jose Mourinho reportedly wants Fonte at Old Trafford.

The self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ is keen to add one more name to his defensive unit to take the pressure of newboy Eric Bailly’s shoulders.

Though the 22-year-old was one of United’s key players against Bournemouth in Sunday’s Premier League opener, Mourinho would welcome an experienced centre-back to provide competition for places.

But that is a luxury Gunners fans can only dream of after the injury crisis Wenger has been dealt with this summer.

That being said, the Frenchman has had more than enough time to see to his side’s defensive frailties. It was even thought that Mustafi would feature in the starting line-up last weekend – but as things stand it now looks like he’s staying put at Valencia.

For Arsenal fans, the frustration comes with the lack of business in the right areas this summer. Wenger chose to spend £35m of his transfer budget on central midfielder Granit Xhaka, even though he already had five players available to him in that area of the pitch, while moves for the likes of Mustafi, Riyad Mahrez, Jamie Vardy and Alexandre Lacazette have so far fizzled into nothing.

However, with less than two weeks to go in the transfer window, we’ve already seen Southampton react to interest in their main man at the back, having offered him an improved contract – does this mean he’s tempted with a move elsewhere?

So will it be Arsenal or Manchester United, where he’s 2/1 to end up? Or will Fonte stay with the Saints? Have your say in the comments section below!
