The four Man United midfielders under threat from Pogba deal

Published:

Paul Pogba has finally returned to Manchester United. That news won’t shock anybody, considering it has been an entire summer in the making, but it will have a number of current Red Devils sweating on their futures.

Jose Mourinho’s fourth signing as United boss is certain to monopolise the Portuguese’s central midfield this season, leaving these four squad members vulnerable to an Old Trafford exit:

Ander Herrera

The Spaniard was once rated highly enough to top United’s shopping list in two straight transfer windows, but has failed to nail down a starting spot since arriving from Athletic Bilbao.

Herrera hasn’t logged more than 1900 league minutes at Old Trafford in his two seasons there, having exceeded 2000 in all five of his La Liga campaigns prior to that.

Marouane Fellaini

With news of the French superstar’s medical breaking minutes before the Community Shield kicked off, Fellaini hardly made a strong case for his continued inclusion in Mourinho’s starting XI.

A first half largely spent wasting possession was followed by the erroneous pass that gifted Jamie Vardy Leicester’s equaliser at Wembley.

Bastian Schweinsteiger

Even before the mega-bucks deal to bring their former youth star back home was hatched, Schweinsteiger’s days at United looked numbered.

Banished to train with the reserves and not handed a single minute of action in United’s pre-season schedule, the death knell is tolling on the German’s Old Trafford career.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah

Although United fans will know the 18-year-old as a defender, he was actually being developed as a midfielder in the club’s youth set up.

Those plans are likely to be put on hold now the club have sent multiple briefcases of cash Juventus’ way for the 23-year-old Pogba.

Luckily for Fosu-Mensah, his ability to play in just about any other position on the pitch means he’ll hang on to his United shirt for the time being.
