Gennady Golovkin v Kell Brook: Your boxing preview for the big fight

“I’m betting the odds are going to change as we get closer to the fight”.

Those were the words of Kell Brook’s trainer Dominic Ingle in the press conference preceding the biggest fight of the year. And currently at 4/1, he’ll be hoping his prediction is accurate if Special K is to have any chance of beating the number one pound-for-pound fighter in world boxing.

We’re now just one day away from the hotly anticipated bout between two undefeated fighters, set to take place in front of 17,000 spectators at London’s O2 Arena. All available tickets were snapped up after just nine minutes of them being released.

But in what form are both fighters going into this one? And where might it be won or lost?

Gennady ‘Triple G’ Golovkin

The 34-year-old Kazakhstani has never lost in the ring in 35 bouts, with 32 KO’s to his name to date.

At 5’ 10½ ” with a reach of 70″, on paper Triple G boasts a slender physical advantage over his opponent, but remember it’s Brook who is stepping up two weight divisions for this one.

Of his 35 bouts, Triple G has faced just 155 rounds, averaging roughly 4.4 rounds per bout, meaning there’s every chance of him winning this one early on.

And we’re enhancing odds on the fight to be over within four rounds to a tempting 10/3.

It’s a bet worth getting on if you think Golovkin can get this one over and done with in the first four rounds, as it’s just 3/1 for GGG to win in rounds 1-4, while our enhanced price both offers more value for money and covers you should Brook shock the world early on tomorrow night.

Kell ‘Special K’ Brook

Also undefeated, Kell Brook has faced 36 bouts in his career to date, and the 30-year-old has 25 KO’s to his name.

However, unlike his opponent, 179 rounds in those 36 fights means his average rounds-per-bout is slightly higher (five) than GGG. And at 5’ 9” with a lesser reach of 69″, it’s safe to say Brook has it all to do in this one.

Though the step-up in weight divisions has led many to write off Special K’s chances, his trainer Dominic Ingle believes there is no difference between Brook and Golovkin.

And following a strict 10-week regime including several visits to universities around the country to help get Brook into the correct physical condition for the fight, the Sheffield-born boxer believes he is in the best shape of his career.

Such preparation led to perhaps the quote of the press conference from Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez who said:

“On Saturday night Kell Brook will discover – will brutally discover – that it takes more than a 10-week scientific experiment to topple Gennady Golovkin.”

The press conference ended with a mandatory face-off and a gentlemanly handshake. But will we see the same levels of respect when the gloves are finally on?
