How the bookies reacted to Frankie’s Magnificent 7

It’s a pretty rare occurrence for a bookmaker to become dewy-eyed when recounting previous big losses but ask any layer how they feel about Frankie Dettori’s Magnificent Seven and they’ll soon well up.

At cumulative odds of 25,059-1 the industry had to cough up a whopping £40m to Frankie’s backers.

However, according to those in the trading room, that sum was dwarfed by the positive exposure Frankie’s incredible feat gave betting and racing.

So, how exactly did those on the receiving end react to being given the most infamous of bloody noses?

We caught up with Ladbrokes’ Mike Dillon to get his recollections of what unfolded on Saturday September 28, 1996.
