It’s fair to say we’ve never seen a transfer window quite like this summer’s, with over £1bn spent by Premier League clubs alone. But there were also plenty of deals – from shrewd loans to marquee signings – throughout the EFL, many of which have slipped under the radar.

So Ladbrokes News are here to redress the balance with the best five buys in the Football League. The question is, will your team’s exciting new signing make the cut?

Sergi Canos (Norwich City)

The new Canaries winger is already off to a flying start, having netted a memorable pair of goals in the 6-1 EFL Cup demolition of Coventry City. But there’s been little doubt of the former Liverpool man’s quality since he burst onto the scene on loan at Brentford last season.

Netting eight times for the Bees in 2015-16, as well as chalking up a number of assists, the 19-year-old is already proven in the Championship, and in addition to his flair and fine finishing, Canos’ decision-making marks him out as an unusually intelligent young player.

At £2.55m, he looks like an absolute snip for the Norfolk outfit, who have started the season in decent form and are 6/5 to gain promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of writing.

Ivan Cavaleiro (Wolverhampton Wanderers)

The Portugal international became Wolves’ club-record signing on Deadline Day, at an estimated £7m – but despite the sizeable price tag, he could well turn out to be a bargain for the newly-minted Midlanders.

Having helped lead AS Monaco to third spot in Ligue 1 last season, the 22-year-old winger terrorised defences with his rapid acceleration, neat footwork and eye for goal, netting both domestically and in Europe.

It remains to be seen how quickly Wolves’ flurry of star acquisitions will gel this season, but with arguably the Championship’s best squad, the 9/2 for the Molineux club to win promotion is unsurprisingly attracting plenty of punters.

Matt Ritchie (Newcastle United)

Expectation is high on Tyneside, and there’s plenty for Newcastle fans to be optimistic about after signing the midfield magician from Bournemouth, and he’s started the campaign in stellar form.

A confidently taken penalty to secure victory over Reading has got the goalscoring midfielder off the mark for the campaign, while the Scotland international bossed the game last time out as the Magpies beat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0.

Having contributed to 10 goals for Bournemouth in the Premier League last season, there’s no doubt Ritchie is one of the most influential and talented players in the Championship this season. Expect him to keep banging the goals in on Tyneside.

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake (Shrewsbury Town)

It’s fair to say the Shrews have lacked a bit of firepower in the early part of the season, with Micky Mellon’s men failing to find the net in five of their eight games so far. But history suggests they now have a man who can solve that goalscoring lull.

The 30-year-old reached double figures for the season last time out, helping Chesterfield avoid relegation. And with the bustling striker now loaned out to the Shrews until January, following Ched Evans’ electric start in Derbyshire, Ebanks-Blake will be desperate to prove the Spireites wrong.

He’s already begun the campaign impressively, with a crucial goal in Chesterfield’s 2-1 EFL Cup win over Wolves Under-23s, and there’s every reason to believe he’ll continue to bang the goals in at Shrewsbury, with 66/1 for him to finish the campaign as League One’s top scorer.

Teddy Mezague (Leyton Orient)

Fans of the O’s haven’t yet been able to witness the quality of the steely French centre-back, due to injury, but once the 26-year-old is back to full fitness, they’re likely to have the best defender in League Two in their ranks.

The robust defender was an integral part of survival in the Belgian top-flight for Royal Excel Mouscron last season, having joined the club in 2014 from French heavyweights Montpellier.

Tough-tackling, physically strong and outstanding in the air, he’s likely to give strikers from Morecambe to Mansfield sleepless nights once back to full fitness, and could play a crucial part as the East London outfit battle to win promotion at 9/4.
