Stokes comes out on top in England Test ratings

England secured a final-day victory in the first Test against Bangladesh in Chittagong, bringing to a close a thrilling contest.

As our player ratings for the tourists show, this was a match that centred around one man:

Ben Stokes – 10/10

Four first-innings wickets, 85 with the bat in England’s second dig and the last two scalps of the final day to win the match.

This Test will be remembered as belonging to Ben Stokes and the Durham all-rounder was duly awarded man-of-the-match honours at the post-match presentations.

Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali – 8/10

Given yet another new batting position by his country, Ali once again displayed his versatility with a first-innings 68 at number five. He also took five wickets in the match, three of them absolute beauties, of which two arrived in the space of four balls on day two.

Bairstow continued his excellent form with 99 runs in the match and contributed to a balance-shifting partnership of 127 with Ben Stokes to set Bangladesh an ultimately-too-large target.

Stuart Broad, Chris Woakes – 7/10

Broad’s involvement in the Test essentially boiled down to two wickets but, as his wickets tend to be, they were huge.

Woakes had a rare match without claiming a victim but was able to contribute important runs in both innings to further bolster his claim as the side’s second-best allrounder after Stokes.

Gareth Batty, Alastair Cook – 6/10

An absence of 11 years hasn’t dulled Batty’s intensity and it was his delivery that opened the door for England’s victory, getting Mushfiqur Rahim caught at short-leg in a pleasing return to international cricket.

Cook may not have contributed much with the bat, but it is a measure of the growth of his captaincy that he helped steer his team to victory in the field. Not many would have predicted him opening with two spinners in the second innings back in his rigid early leadership days.

Joe Root, Ben Duckett, Adil Rashid – 5/10

Root’s first-innings 40 was the quickest of the match in terms of strike rate, but this was one of those occasions where the Yorkshireman’s class was on show all too briefly.

Rashid took wickets, but was generally inconsistent, while Duckett had a quiet debut.

Gary Ballance – 3/10

He took some fine catches at short-leg, but he is picked to score runs and 10 of them in this match doesn’t warrant his continued inclusion in the side.
