Sunderland’s record-setting woe puts Moyes under pressure

A last-minute winner for West Ham may have sent the home fans potty at the London Stadium at the weekend, but it heaped plenty of pressure on Sunderland manager David Moyes.

The Black Cats have not won any of their opening nine league games of the season, becoming the first team in top-flight history to achieve the “feat” on two separate occasions.

Escaping relegation has become something of a speciality for the north-east outfit, who have a best finish of 14th over the past four seasons.

For new manager Moyes, the club’s poor run of form has put his future at the helm in danger. The former Everton manager is our 4/6 favourite to be the next Premier League boss to leave his post.

No side has scored fewer goals than the Stadium of Light team’s six, while only West Ham and Hull have shipped more strikes at the opposite end of the field.

A home game against Arsenal represents a tough next outing for the strugglers, with a poor result possibly enough for the club’s board to swing the axe on their manager just 10 games into the campaign.

The relegation favourites at 2/5, Sunderland have a recent history of using a managerial change to spark an improvement in their fortunes, and could well use the tactic again this term.

Bringing Sam Allardyce back to the club is the most obvious option, although it could be that the Black Cats give Moyes longer to turn things around.
