Why now is the time to back Tottenham Hotspur to be top at Christmas

We’re seven games into the Premier League season, and the table is really starting to take shape now. That means this is probably the best time to look at the ‘Top at Christmas’ market, and while Manchester City have enjoyed a solid start to the campaign, it’s Tottenham Hotspur who are are our tip for the top come December 25.
Past seasons coupled with current form certainly point towards Spurs, and at 5/1, they’re simply too good to ignore.
For starters, they’re yet to lose a game this season. Considering Pep Guardiola enjoyed a 100 per cent start to his Premier League managerial career prior to defeat at White Hart Lane last weekend, credit has to go to the north London outfit, who are just one point behind the leaders.
In fact, they’ve accumulated more points than any other side in the top-flight since the turn of the year.
But it’s not just their incredible form in 2016 that makes Spurs our top tip. A quick glance at past tables will tell you all you need to know.
In the last eight seasons, five teams in second-place after seven games have gone on to top the table at Christmas. Included in the three years where this wasn’t the case is Leicester City’s freak season last year, and Chelsea’s complete domination of the division back in 2014-15, where they spent almost an entire campaign in first-place.
Given that Pochettino’s men find themselves in second-place as things stand, the statistics certainly suggest that Spurs could be top at Christmas for the first time in the Premier League.
Tottenham still have to face Chelsea, Manchester United and bitter rivals Arsenal between now and Boxing Day. Win those, and there’s every chance punters will be cashing in on them.
One side who won’t want to claim that spot however is Liverpool, as in those eight seasons, it’s a position they’ve been in twice before. While that may sound impressive on paper, they’re the only side not to go on to win the league in that time.
