England v Scotland: The key men to watch at Wembley
Published:In case you somehow hadn’t heard, the oldest fixture in international football is set for its 113th edition as England take on Scotland at Wembley.
It’s a crucial clash for both sides in the race to qualify for the World Cup in Russia in 2018.
England boast 47 wins to Scotland’s 41 from their previous encounters, dating way back to 1872.
But back to the present, and we’ve highlighted three men who could prove key to each side’s fortunes on Friday night…
Wayne Rooney
Gareth Southgate will have been delighted to see Wayne Rooney pull the strings last weekend as the Red Devils waltzed past Swansea, and a similar performance at Wembley could prove Scotland’s undoing.
The England skipper netted the winner the last time England and Scotland met, and he’s set for a pivotal role at Wembley.
Gary Cahill
Having recently won his 50th cap, Gary Cahill has become one of England’s elder statesmen.
Growing a fine partnership with John Stones, the experienced Cahill will need to be on guard against a bysterious Scotland attack.
Robert Snodgrass
The Hull man netted a hat-trick against Malta, and his introduction last weekend proved inspirational as the Tigers came from behind to beat Southampton.
One of the Tartan Army’s most creative outlets, keeping Snodgrass quiet will see England well. However they’ll be helpless if the former Norwich forward connects with one of his set-piece specialties.
