Everton v Liverpool: 3 things to expect from the Merseyside derby

Published:

While Liverpool have tended to dominate this fixture at Anfield, we tend to see a much closer and more competitive game at Goodison Park, with the last four meetings here all finishing level.

But things change quickly in football. Everton are under the leadership of Ronald Koeman for the first time in this fixture. Brendan Rodgers was Liverpool boss last time they travelled to the Blue half of Merseyside. Oh, and Sadio Mane was netting against Liverpool for Southampton last season.

So, what can you expect from the latest instalment of this famous fixture? Here’s what the Ladbrokes News team are tipping up…

Prepare for a last-gasp twist

Plenty has changed since the last clash between this pair in April, but one thing you can still rely on is a healthy dose of late drama – especially if it’s a tightly-poised affair.

The last 10 meetings have thrown up six goals in the final 10 minutes, and they’ve tended to have an enormous impact on the result.

From Phil Jagielka’s 91st-minute screamer to salvage a point at Anfield in 2014, to Daniel Sturridge’s 89th-minute header in the 3-3 thriller at Goodison Park and Andy Carroll’s FA Cup semi-final winner – this fixture has always doled out joy and heartbreak at the last minute.

And you can back another helping of late goalmouth action on Monday night, with 13/8 for either side to score beyond the 80-minute mark.

Liverpool pair’s purple patch could prove vital

One was a bit-part player at Anfield last season, and the other netted just four Premier League goals from midfield – but right now, Divock Origi and Adam Lallana are building a fantastic understanding which is bringing out the best in both men.

The pair have scored all of Liverpool’s last five goals between them, with both finding the net in each of the last two outings – a 2-2 draw against West Ham United and a 3-0 victory at Middlesbrough respectively.

They teamed up superbly at the Riverside last weekend, with both men setting up one another’s goals with an inch-perfect slide-rule pass.

With the pair seemingly unstoppable right now, and Everton chalking up just one clean sheet in their last 12 games, the 6/1 on offer for Lallana and Origi to both score looks like fantastic value.

Toffees’ fighting spirit can be invaluable

While it’s Liverpool who have enjoyed the better form of late, Koeman’s side have proved resolute and spirited when up against it in recent weeks, rescuing five points from losing positions in their last five outings.

Leighton Baines’ late penalty rescued a point against in-form Manchester United, while Seamus Coleman also registered an 89th-minute equaliser against Swansea City on home soil.

But it was Tuesday night’s 2-1 triumph over Arsenal that really emphasised the skill and desire the Blues possess at their best, with Seamus Coleman and Ashley Williams turning round a deficit to secure all three points against a Gunners side packed with attacking quality.

That means backing Everton to come from behind and win or draw looks well worth a flutter at 9/2.

In the match betting, the Toffees are 31/10 to come out on top, with Liverpool 10/11 to get the win, and 27/10 for the draw.
