Stourbridge stun Northampton to create Emirates FA Cup history

Published:

Stourbridge caused the shock of the Emirates FA Cup Second Round by beating Northampton Town 1-0 in their re-arranged fixture last night.

A crowd of 2,520 packed into the War Memorial Athletic Ground to witness a slice of history with Jack Duggan’s 86th minute goal securing the Glassboys’ passage to the Third Round for the first time in their history.

In beating their League One opponents, the Northern Premier League side defied a gap of 89 places in the football pyramid with their reward a tie at Wycombe Wanderers in early January.

And it’s fair to say the magnitude of the victory hasn’t quite sunk in yet…

Elsewhere, a series of FA Cup Second Replays also took place with Eastleigh winning their all-National League clash against FC Halifax Town 2-0 to book a trip to Championship side Brentford.

MK Dons were 3-1 victors over League One rivals Charlton Athletic and will visit Brighton and Hove Albion in the next round while Oxford United saw off Macclesfield Town 3-0 and will meet Rotherham United.

However, for pure drama the Replay between Fleetwood Town and Shrewsbury Town will take some beating this season.

The Cod Army found themselves 2-0 down after an hour but took full advantage of the fact the Shrews were reduced to 10-men to roar back.

A brace from Devante Cole and Ash Hunter’s stoppage-time winner capped a remarkable comeback and in turn set-up a date with Bristol City.

There are still two Emirates FA Cup Second Round ties yet to be decided.

The Replays between Peterborough United and Notts County and Newport County and Plymouth Argyle are due to be played on Tuesday December 21 and Wednesday December 22 respectively.

Fancy the Glassboys to go all the way?
