Wenger looking to Valencia star to end Arsenal’s defensive woes

| 21.12.2016

Things have gone from bright to bleak for Arsenal in the space of two games, with the Gunners throwing away leads against Everton and Manchester City, losing both games.

That’s seen many fans call for defensive reinforcements, and their cry could be answered with the signing of Jose Gaya.

The youngster has emerged as one of the finest young talents in Spanish football, cementing himself as first choice left-back for both club side Valencia and Spain’s under-21 side.

Despite a recurring injury keeping the Pedreguer native sidelined for part of last season, his impact on the side was huge. In the 20 La Liga games where he featured, Los Che chalked up 27 points. By contrast, they averaged less than a point per game without him.

Pacy, tricky and tidy in defence, it’s no surprise the 21-year-old has caught the eye of Arsene Wenger. And with Arsenal’s current regular on the left-flank – Nacho Monreal – enduring a disappointing season, it seems the most crucial area for them to strengthen in.

With no firm interest from other top clubs on the continent, Wenger could well see this deal over the line in January. And if Valencia’s asking price is anything close to the £15.3m estimated by Transfermarkt.co.uk, then the Gunners’ boss could have a bargain on his hands.

Having already played regularly against sides like Barcelona and Atletico Madrid domestically, and caught the eye in the Champions League for Valencia, there’s little doubt he’d be ready to slot right in at the Emirates.

Next up for Arsenal is the visit of West Bromwich Albion on Boxing Day, with 1/3 for the Gunners to secure a fifth win in six meetings with the Baggies.
