World Darts Championship: Will we see a Webster double tonight?

Published:

Not many would back against Michael van Gerwen in this year’s PDC World Darts Championship – but we are. He’s up against Darren Webster this evening, who features in our 25/1 double with his namesake.

Think we’re talking nonsense? Here’s why both the Demolition Man and Mark Webster can progress to the last 16…

Mark Webster v Daryl Gurney

This is unfamiliar territory for Webby’s opponent, having never reached this stage at the Ally Pally in his career.

Webster, on the other hand, has been here four times before, losing just once in the Third Round.

His scoring was out of this world against Mensur Suljovic in the last round, it was just his finishing that let him down.

But it was quite the opposite in his first match of the tournament. And you’d think that now he’s found the perfect balance, at the right time.

Both players held off potential comebacks from two of the Top 10 in the world last time out, but who’ll come out on top here?

It’s a stage which Webster likes a lot, and we reckon he’ll have the psychological advantage over his opponent, despite the odds suggesting otherwise.

Top Bet – Mark Webster to win @ 11/8

Michael van Gerwen v Darren Webster

Hear us out: Darren Webster can beat Michael van Gerwen.

He may not have done it for almost three years, but he came mightily close the last time he faced the world number one. He stormed to a 6-0 lead against MVG at the Players Championship finals back in November, before losing 11-8.

Futhermore, the Demolition Man lived up to his name last time out, breezing past Simon Whitlock 4-0, while his next opponent faced a tough test in Cristo Reyes.

And for all the titles Mighty Mike has won in his career, he’s hardly set the world alight when it comes to the biggest stage of all.

Perhaps it’s the format. Although it’s still the same game, there’s something different about playing sets as opposed to just a race to a certain amount of legs.

Van Gerwen is known for storming away from his opponents, but the Worlds just doesn’t allow you to do that.

If he gets off to a solid start, the crowd will be right behind the outsider here.

And if that happens, it could be more disappointment at the Ally Pally for MVG.
