Arsenal ace makes his demands clear – so will it be bye-bye Ozil?

| 09.01.2017

They say no individual is bigger than a football club. But the latest reports coming from Arsenal are suggesting that two huge names are holding the key to future success at the Emirates. Mesut Ozil has made a decision on his future – it’s now time for the board to do the same.

“He [Arsene Wenger] is the one who signed me and he is the one whose trust I have. The club also knows that I want to be clear what the manager is going to do [in the future]”.

Those were Ozil’s words this weekend when asked about the reason behind an apparent stall in contract talks.

In short, if Wenger leaves, then so does he.

And that admission is only likely to further divide Gooners worldwide. Plenty want the Frenchman to remain in charge for as long as possible, while a growing number of fans can’t wait to see the back of him.

But there are still a couple of things which both sets of supporters still have in common – and a love of Ozil is one of them.

Since arriving in north London, the World Cup winner has contributed to an impressive 29 goals and 50 assists in all competitions, and he’s well on course to make this his best campaign in front of goal.

But it could well be his parting gift, with many fans and pundits expecting this to be Wenger’s last season in charge of the club.

Of course, a lot of that depends on the Gunners’ overall performance both domestically and in Europe.

However, failure to win a major trophy this year would mean they’ve won just two of a possible 52 in the last 13 years. For a club of Arsenal’s stature, that’s simply not good enough.

And right now, though the Premier League title is still just about achievable, it looks as though Arsenal’s main focus in the league is to secure yet another Top Four finish.

If they can do that, and stay in the title race for the remainder of the season, then there’s every chance Wenger and Ozil will stay and the club can add more quality to their ranks in the summer.

But they could just as easily miss out on a Champions League spot, with five other sides making this the closest Premier League scramble we’ve seen in years. Finish outside the Top Four, and it’ll be more than Ozil that Gooners will have to worry about waving goodbye to.

Whichever way you look at it, it seems increasingly unlikely that the former Real Madrid man will spend the rest of his career at the Emirates.

So the question for Arsenal fans is simple – do you want a player calling all the shots at your club, or would you be happy to see the back of him?
