Crystal Palace line up former Newcastle and Man United winger

Come February, the Crystal Palace team is to look rather different to the one which began the year. Sam Allardyce is busy making numerous signings, and the latest target is reportedly Gabriel Obertan.

The Eagles have already signed Patrick van Aanholt from Sunderland and Jeffrey Schlupp from Leicester, while Carl Jenkinson has been in advanced discussions over a switch from Arsenal.

Meanwhile, rumours persist that Christian Benteke and Andros Townsend could yet head away from Selhurst Park.

The Townsend link is of particular interest, as an Obertan arrival would all but signal the end of the England international’s time in south London.

Obertan is currently plying his trade in Russia with Anzhi Makhachkala, but it’s been reported that the club have financial concerns and may soon offload players to raise income.

The French winger is no stranger to the Premier League, playing 28 times for Manchester United between 2009 and 2011.

That was followed by five seasons at Newcastle, although the 29-year-old fluctuated in and out of the team.

Obertan’s arrival would hand Allardyce some extra cover on the wings, especially if Townsend ends up leaving.

The Eagles are in Emirates FA Cup action this weekend, when they host Manchester City.

And with just a sole win in the Replay over Bolton to call upon from his time in charge of the Eagles so far, victory here could be a real watershed moment for Allardyce.

But our odds on a home win of 5/1 suggest it will be far from easy to defeat Pep Guardiola’s Citizens.
