Joe Root priced for unbeaten year, to win more Tests than Cook

Joe Root - England captain odds

Joe Root has been announced as the successor to Alistair Cook and we’ve priced up a number of specials relating to England’s new Test captain.

The Yorkshireman has a tough act to follow but we make it just a 4/7 chance that he wins his first series as skipper against South Africa in July.

No batsman has scored more than Root’s 4,594 runs since he made his Test bow in December 2012.

And we’re offering 7/2 that the 26-year-old scores a hundred when South Africa visit Lord’s this summer.

At shorter odds it’s 6/4 that Root scores more Test hundreds than Alistair Cook did as captain (12) while it’s the same price for the new man to win more Test matches than the outgoing leader (24).

Meanwhile, patriotic punters may also be interested in the 16/1 for Root to be undefeated in 2017 as England Test captain.

And finally, Cook may be standing down from his role as captain but he’ll still be on call to perform at the crease.

As such we’re going 5/2 that he goes on to beat Sachin Tendulkar’s World Record for most career Test runs (15,921), having notched 11,057 thus far.
