Man City Women strengthen squad with USA ace Carli Lloyd

As if going unbeaten in their 2016 FA WSL success wasn’t enough, Manchester City Women have today added USA international and World Player of the Year Carli Lloyd to their ranks in preparation for the campaign ahead.

The attack-minded midfielder has been brought in to offer City something different going forward. While they lifted their first FA WSL trophy last season without losing a single game, there are still question marks around their ability to score goals.

That’s an area in which Lloyd can certainly help, not to mention the experience she’ll bring.

With 58 goals to her name at club level, the 34-year-old USA captain has also netted 96 times in 232 games for her country, winning the Women’s World Cup back in 2015.

Man City finished last campaign some five points ahead of Chelsea, who netted a staggering 42 goals in 16 games.

Fran Kirby will be looking to add to her nine goals from 12 appearances for the Blues since signing in 2015. And with the west London outfit also boasting last year’s top scorer Eniola Aluko in their ranks, they’ll certainly be in with a chance of winning their second league title.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have been relatively quiet in recent years in the league, following back-to-back triumphs in 2011 and 2012.

But they head into this campaign as FA Women’s Cup winners, and they’ll be hoping to build on that success and force themselves back into a Champions League place.

It remains to be seen whether City will add anyone else to their ranks before the season starts.

But as huge names go, it’ll be hard for them to sign anyone bigger than Carli Lloyd.
