Where will Luke Shaw go? Arsenal 5/2 favourites for Man United outcast

| 28.02.2017

He was tipped to be the Premier League and England’s next big thing, but Luke Shaw’s career as a top-line player is in real danger of coming to an end.

The full-back has made just seven Premier League appearances this season, and in total has featured in just 12 league games across the last two seasons.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but Shaw’s move from Southampton to Manchester United in 2014 – when aged just 19 – must surely be regarded as disastrous.

Things looked promising at the start of this season, with the England international playing in all five of United’s first Premier League games under Jose Mourinho.

But since then, Shaw has made just six appearances in all competitions while United have gone from strength to strength.

Injuries across November and December haven’t helped, but despite returning to fitness over six weeks ago, Shaw hasn’t played a single minute of Premier League football this year.

Indeed Shaw’s only appearance in 2017 has been in the 4-0 Emirates FA Cup win over Wigan.

And with Mourinho favouring Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo at left-back, it seems Shaw’s Man United days are over.

So the question now is, where does he go next?

His saving grace may well be his contract, which expires next summer. It leaves Man United with the option of losing him for nothing in 18 months, or cashing in at the end of this season.

With a transfermarkt.co.uk valuation of £17m, we fancy the Red Devils may opt for the latter.

It also allows a potential buyer the chance to grab a cut-price deal.

It’s well within reason Shaw could go for as little as £10m, even though United will be keen to ensure they recoup as much of their £30m outlay in 2014.

Arsenal lead the betting at 5/2, where Shaw would provide able competition for the 31-year-old Nacho Monreal.

And having used James Milner as left-back this season, it’s no surprise to see Liverpool chalked up as 4/1 second favourites.
