Annan are finally finding their groove according to star striker

| 02.03.2017

Annan Athletic striker Max Wright has heaped praise on his manager and team-mates after a summer of upheaval left the Ladbrokes League 2 side struggling to find their rhythm.

Wright is currently Annan’s top scorer with eight goals in all competitions this season, including last week’s winning goal in the 1-0 victory against Clyde.

The Galabankies are currently fourth in the table and aiming for promotion this season thanks to some strong recent form. But Wright insists the club were only concerned with making sure they stayed in the division after a stuttering start to the campaign.

Speaking exclusively to Ladbrokes News, Wright said: “The target changed in the summer. We’re basically a new team with a lot of new players, so we couldn’t really set one.

“It was more just seeing how we started and trying to make sure we were alright in the division. Once we got a bit more comfortable and we basically knew our level, then we’ve been able to push on.

“We were in the mix at the turn of the year and we were happy with that, but obviously the signings we made in January have helped us kick on a bit more too.

“It happens a lot with part-time teams. The make-up of the team can change a lot and that’s just the nature of it.

“But that can make it really hard to get into a rhythm with team-mates. Sometimes it just clicks and you get lucky, but most of the time it has to be worked at and things like injuries and suspensions obviously don’t help much either.

“If you can get used to the players you’re playing with, it can make a huge difference.”

Wright also reserved praise for his manager Jim Chapman and reckons the experienced coach could do a solid job for another club higher up the Scottish football pyramid.

He added: “The gaffer’s been really consistent over the years with what I imagine is one of the smallest budgets.

“I know there are a lot of different clubs looking for different things, but I’m sure if he was given the chance further up the league he’d be more than good enough to take it and do well.

“For now, he’s doing well for Annan, and like the players, we’ll just see where it takes us.”

Next up for Annan is a tricky trip to Montrose this weekend, with Chapman’s men priced at 11/8 to claim all three points.
