Camera-shy: How Arsenal have flopped on TV in recent weeks

| 11.04.2017

It’s bad enough seeing your season tumble into oblivion, but it turns out Arsenal have been doing it in full-view of all of us.

We’ve traipsed through the results of Arsenal’s most recent televised fixtures, and it makes for some grim reading.

Here’s how the Gunners have suffered their public humiliation…

Chelsea 3-1 Arsenal – February 4

The weekend’s lunch-time kick-off showcased how far Arsenal had fallen.

After hammering Chelsea 3-0 in the reverse tie in September, the Gunners were left chasing shadows as Antonio Conte’s men returned the favour in style.

Arsenal 2-0 Hull – February 11

Again kicking off proceedings on Saturday lunch-time, this time Arsenal picked up all three points.

It wasn’t easy though, and the win was never secure until Alexis Sanchez’s penalty deep into stoppage time.

Bayern Munich 5-1 Arsenal – February 15

We all know what happened here. Laurent Koscielny went off injured and Arsenal imploded. Next.

Liverpool 3-1 Arsenal – March 4

Starting with Danny Welbeck and Olivier Giroud up front, Arsenal didn’t come close to threatening Liverpool.

With the visitors 1-0 down after just nine minutes, the Anfield outfit were always in complete control as the Gunners suffered another public bashing.

Arsenal 1-5 Bayern Munich – March 7

But how things were to get worse. Leading 1-0 at the break, the Gunners were on course to salvage some respectability. But events have a canny knack of repeating themselves.

Koscielny went off again – dismissed this time – and amazingly the same result followed.

West Brom 3-1 Arsenal – March 18

If Chelsea and Liverpool exposed Arsenal’s lack of creativity, then West Brom brutally highlighted the lack of fight.

Level at the interval, the Gunners again flopped to subdued defeat at the Hawthorns.

Arsenal 2-2 Manchester City – April 2

A slight improvement here, as the Gunners picked up a draw against Manchester City.

They twice fought back from being a goal behind, but you still felt they were holding something back.

Crystal Palace 3-0 Arsenal – April 10

Perhaps the worst result of the lot as Crystal Palace simply outplayed Wenger’s men.

Showing no unison, creativity or drive, Andros Townsend and Wilfried Zaha tormented the Gunners’ defence for a fully deserved victory.

So there we have it.

Over the last two months Arsenal have played top-level opposition live on the box eight times. From that they’ve claimed just one win and one draw, losing six times while conceding 24 goals. Now that’s camera-shy.

(We’re ignoring the two Emirates FA Cup wins over Sutton United and Lincoln, because, well, they really weren’t contests.)
