Here’s what today’s stars were doing when Spurs last finished above Arsenal

Assuming both Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal win tonight, the former will head into Sunday’s North London Derby knowing that a win will ensure they put an end to a horrendous Premier League record.

Sunday 14 May, 1995. That was the last time Spurs finished a top-flight campaign ahead of their bitter rivals – but they’re on the verge of finally doing it again.

We’re not going to bore you by telling you Livin’ Joy was top of the charts with Dreamer, or that Circle of Friends was the number one box office movie that week. We’re better than that.

We’ve searched long and hard to find out exactly what Arsenal and Spurs’ current stars were doing on the final day of that 1994-95 campaign – probably.

Rob Holding, Alex Iwobi, Dele Alli & Harry Winks

Between them, this quartet have accumulated 227 league appearances in the top four tiers of English football.

None of them were born the last time Tottenham finished above Arsenal.

Mesut Ozil

Picture the scene. A football field in Gelsenkirchen, the scores level with two minutes remaining. A win for the home side secures the league title.

Step forward, six-year-old Mesut Ozil, who is clean through on goal. He rounds the keeper and heads into the six-yard box. He looks up, spots a teammate in space, lays the ball off and said player puts it away.

The Assist King was born.*

Jack Wilshere

A three-year-old Wilshere could have almost definitely been found in the pre-school nurse’s office after grazing his knee following a 50:50 tackle with a fellow pupil, who may or may not have been a Spurs fan.

Harry Kane

Rumour has it the then-future England star had just secured the league title for Chingford Town U2’s, with a routine hat-trick to take his tally for the season to 24.

Mauricio Pochettino

The current Spurs boss was one season into his six year spell with La Liga outfit Espanyol, after signing from boyhood club Newell’s Old Boys.

Aged just 23, nobody knew just how great a manager Poch would become 15 years down the line.

Arsene Wenger

The same can be said about his rival in the dugout on Saturday, Arsene Wenger.

Back in 1995, the Frenchman was relatively unknown – certainly to English fans. He was busy earning his stripes with Japan side Nagoya Grampus Eight, where there wasn’t a ウェンガーアウト banner in sight.

So that’s what was happening in the world the last time Spurs finished above their neighbours in the Premier League, but it’s looking likely that run will come to an end this season.

The question is: when will it be confirmed?

Kane and co would love it to happen this weekend when they welcome Wenger’s men to White Hart Lane, and 19/20 says they pick up all three points on Sunday.
