Look away now, Man United fans – things could turn horribly wrong

Things had been going so well for Jose Mourinho and Manchester United. Unbeaten in 22 Premier League games, an EFL Cup under their belt and a Europa League semi-final to contend. It seems nothing can go wrong*.

*Or shall we say it seemed nothing could go wrong.

United’s European progression came at a cost, with star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic falling awkwardly on his knee and being forced off the field.

Though we don’t know how serious the injury is, we can comfortably say it’s going to take more than the physio’s magic spray to bring Ibra back to full fitness in the next few weeks – there are even whispers he could be out until 2018.

He’s certainly a huge name to replace, and it’s thought the Red Devils will splash the cash in the summer to bring someone in of a similar standard.

So where does that leave them for the remainder of this season?

Currently four points off the top four in the Premier League with seven games still to go, Mourinho’s men have it all to do between now and the end of the campaign.

Battling it out with Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal for a Champions League spot, United’s best chance of qualifying for Europe’s elite competition next year has to be via a Europa League success this time out.

But when it rains, it doesn’t just rain light showers. If the latest reports are to be believed, it could soon pour over Old Trafford…

That’s because Real Madrid could finally be set to land David De Gea.

The Spanish goalkeeper has once again been a key figure for United this season, but it’s believed he’s put his home in Greater Manchester up for sale.

Are we reading too much into this, or could the Spain international finally be heading for an Old Trafford exit?

Up next for United is the visit of Burnley on Sunday afternoon. Prior to Ibra’s injury, Mourinho would’ve surely been expecting his team to mop the floor with their opponents, who’ve picked up just four of a possible 51 points on the road this term.

That’ll be tough to do now though, as Sean Dyche’s men will now head into this fixture confident of keeping United’s front line quiet.
