Why West Ham slide and Argentine link is good news for Tottenham

He may have only arrived at West Ham at the beginning of last season, but Manuel Lanzini could be set for a summer exit – although it’ll depend on just how far the Hammers fall between now and May.
Their form over the last five games has been worse than any other side in the Premier League, having failed to pick up a point. And that leaves them dangerously close to the relegation zone right now, despite finishing last campaign just four points off a Champions League place.
Uncertainty surrounding Slaven Bilic’s future hasn’t helped matters, and the East London outfit still haven’t settled into their new stadium.
But Lanzini has been impressive so far this season with seven goals and two assists to his name in the top-flight.
That means the 24-year-old has already bettered the tally he reached last season. And were the Hammers to find themselves in the bottom three at the end of the campaign, the Argentine would have a queue of potential suitors waiting to snap him up.
But according to our traders, it’s Tottenham Hotspur who lead the way in the potential race for his signature, with 3/1 on offer for him to make the move across London team up with the likes of Dele Alli and Harry Kane.
It’s likely Mauricio Pochettino has been keeping an eye on his compatriot, who netted in the 3-2 defeat to Spurs back in November, having also scored against them 12 months prior to that.
What’s more, it’s the manner of the goals he’s got which makes Lanzini such an exciting prospect. As well as those goals against Tottenham, he’s scored against Chelsea, Liverpool, Everton and reigning Premier League champions Leicester City in the last two years.
His versatility would be welcomed too, as Lanzini boasts the ability to play through the middle or out wide.
While Spurs have been a solid outfit thus far, there question marks remain over the strength in depth (or lack of) at White Hart Lane.
Adding Lanzini to their ranks would go a long way towards rectifying that slight concern.
Lanzini’s current team will welcome Tottenham to the London Stadium in a month’s time, but before then, the Hammers will face Stoke City, Everton, Sunderland and Swansea.
They’re 21/20 to beat the latter this weekend at home.
