There’s nothing to match the Grand National. It’s renowned as the race that almost everyone, from your nan to the postman,will watch and have a flutter on.
And ahead of the 2019 renewal, we’ve got the fun facts, favourites and more covered!
Aintree’s 4m2f test is the most famous steeplechase in the world, with over 600m people tuning in across the globe last year and a predicted £250m expected to be gambled on the 172nd running.
The final declarations come in on 4th April, two days before the race – with a maximum of 40 horses galloping away once the starter waves them clear.
Everyone has a strong fancy on the race or a theory about how to pick a winner!
But to kick-off, here are the basics…
When is the 2019 Grand National?
The runners get underway in this year’s Grand National at 5:15pm on Saturday 6th April.
That means you can watch the day’s earlier action – including five Premier League games – before the race takes place.
Where is the Grand National?
The famous Aintree racecourse hosts the Grand National, as it has done since the first edition back in 1839 – with Lottery the first (and slowest!) ever winner.
The Merseyside track was opened in 1829, making it the fifth-oldest National Hunt course in the country.
With its 16 steeplechase fences (14 of which have to be jumped twice), the Aintree Grand National is one of the toughest of all courses to complete!
How can I watch the Grand National?
As with much of the year’s top racing, the Grand National will be screened on ITV. They’ve screened the event since 2017, having taken over from Channel 4.

Latest trends ahead of Grand National 2019
Every winner since World War II (1946) has been aged between eight and 12. However, 2018 champion Tiger Roll was one of the youngest, having turned eight the year before!
Since 2006, just two favourites have won this race in the last 11 years. 2009 saw the joint-longest winner of all time, with Liam Treadwell riding 100/1 outsider Mon Morne to victory.
The last decade has also seen a pair of 33/1 victors as well as 2013 champion Auroras Encore (66/1).
Recent winners have tended to be on the lighter side. All of the previous three winners have carried less than 11-0, while Auroras Encore is the lightest winner since way Bobbyjo in 1999!
Four of the last six runnings have gone to Irish-bred horses, while the only man to ride multiple winners in that time is Leighton Aspell (2014 and 2015).
Unsurprisingly, Grand National winners tend to head into the race in fine fettle. Each of the last two champions had won their previous outing before the big one at Aintree.
What are the latest Grand National odds?
While we’re still a way off the final declarations, there are a number of runners and riders set to feature – and you can get a head start with our 2019 Grand National odds.
As it stands, Tiger Roll is the 10/1 favourite for glory at Aintree. Victory would make him the first back-to-back winner since Red Rum in 1974.
Willie Mullins’ Rathvinden is next-vbest at 12/1, with a trio of Pleasant Company, Elegant Escape and Anibale Fly at 20/1.
There’s another former winner among the dark horses, too. 2017 winner One for Arthur is on offer at 33s
