Fernando Alonso now second-favourite to win Indy 500

He’s swapped his troubled Formula One campaign for a shot at the big time at Indianapolis 500, and the latest odds suggest Fernando Alonso really could win at the Brickyard.
The Spaniard was initially installed as a 16/1 shot, but those odds have tumbled each time he has taken to the famous speedway.
And after qualifying in a superb fifth, the Indy rookie is now just 13/2 to win this weekend.
That’s second favourite in the betting, by the way.
Only experienced pro and four-time Indycar champion Scott Dixon is above Alonso in the market at 6/1.
Formula One champions have enjoyed strong success at Indianapolis over the years, with Jim Clark and Graham Hill both tasting that famous bottle of milk on Victory Lane in the 1960s.
And Nigel Mansell could have won during his debut effort in 1993, eventually finishing a fine third.
You can throw Juan Pablo Montoya into the mix too, with the popular Colombian winning in 1999.
Alonso has been wise to not big up his own expectations in the media, but it’s clear the two-time world champion isn’t in the States to make up the numbers.
Amid continued frustrations with his McLaren-Honda in Formula One, Alonso has made public his desire to win the famous Triple Crown of Motor Sport.
Only Hill has managed to win each of the Monaco Grand Prix, the Indy 500 and the Le Mans 24 hours, while Montoya is only missing the latter.
