Liverpool v Southampton: Klopp can end his own Saints hoodoo

Jurgen Klopp - Liverpool odds

Liverpool owe Southampton one this season. Having been beaten over two-legs in the EFL Cup semi-finals by Claude Puel’s men, and held in the reverse league fixture, a bit of payback is very much in order.

And we fancy the Reds to exact their revenge in their upcoming Super Sunday clash at Anfield.

The hosts’ top-four place still requires securing while home manager Jurgen Klopp will also want to get the Southampton monkey off his back, having failed to beat the South Coat outfit in his three Premier League clashes with this weekend’s visitors.

Of course, Klopp’s side will have to first do something they haven’t managed so far this term – score against Southampton.

But with Adam Lallana and Philippe Coutinho both in line for starts we can’t see that being a problem this time around.

Added to that, the Saints have won just one of their last five visits to this part of Merseyside.

Liverpool are the 4/7 favourites to win with the away team 9/2 outsiders and the draw priced at 29/10.

For stattos, it’s worth noting that seven of Southampton’s 11 league wins this season have come on a Sunday.

However, we can’t see another forthcoming here.

Last weekend’s disappointing 0-0 draw against Hull City was perhaps symbolic of where Southampton’s season is heading.

And with only two goals scored in this pair’s three meetings in 2016-17 it could be wise to back under 2.5 goals in this latest encounter at 6/5.

Reds midfielder Emre Can is 7/2 to net at any time and follow-up his wonder goal heroics last time out although the greater value in that market lies with either Roberto Firmino or Coutinho to score at 13/10.

Meanwhile, for a team supposedly lacking defensive depth it’s interesting to note that Liverpool’s last two victories have come without conceding.

Given that this could be a tight affair it might also be worth backing the hosts to win to nil at 19/10.
