No surprises in the SPOTY market with Anthony Joshua clear favourite

We said a couple of months ago that if Anthony Joshua could beat Wladimir Klitschko, his odds of winning Sports Personality of the Year would drop substantially.
Lo and behold, that’s exactly what’s happened.
Having been priced up at 5/2 previously, his Wembley glory last weekend has seen those odds of becoming the first boxer to win the award since Joe Calzaghe in 2007 slashed to just 1/4.
And if the hotly anticipated bout with Tyson Fury goes ahead before the end of the year, you can expect an even shorter price on AJ before the awards do… provided he came out on top.
Joshua’s success has meant another sporting great’s odds have been on the drift though: Andy Murray.
Of course, there’s a long way to go between now and the award ceremony, and a huge summer ahead for the Scot, who will be attempting to retain his Wimbledon title.
Do that, and the pendulum may just swing again. He’s currently a 10/1 shot for his fourth SPOTY win in five years, having been 5s two months ago.
Interestingly though, plenty of money has come in for tennis star Johanna Konta over recent weeks.
In fact, she’s actually our biggest market mover, having been priced up as a 50/1 shot for the SPOTY gong back in December.
Two WTA wins in the opening four months of 2017 have seen Konta’s odds cut to just 8/1.
But we’re keeping an eye on the British number one, especially given Serena Wiliams’ absence from the sport.
That’s left the door wide open for the 25-year-old to win a Grand Slam. If she manages that, she’ll certainly give AJ and Murray a run for their money.
