Odds suggest Tottenham are leading the way in race for England ace

| 07.05.2017

For the second season running, Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspur side look to have fallen short in their quest to lift the Premier League title for the first time.

This isn’t a question of bottle though as far as we’re concerned. It’s more about strength in depth – or lack of.

Who can fill Harry Kane’s boots in his absence? The same question applies to Dele Alli, Toby Alderweireld, Danny Rose and Kyle Walker. In truth, we could go on…

So if there’s one thing Spurs must do this summer, it’s add to their ranks.

And the latest odds are suggesting they could secure a deal for Everton and England star Ross Barkley.

Reports this morning said that the North London outfit would face stiff competition for Barkley’s signature from their bitter rivals, Arsenal.

But our traders make Tottenham clear favourites at 6/4 to land the 23-year-old this summer.

The Gunners, meanwhile, remain 5/1 shots while Chelsea are 4s.

A relatively quiet campaign last time out was followed up with a much more impressive season from the attacking midfielder this year.

He’s featured in 34 of Everton’s 36 top-flight games, starting 31 of them while chipping in with four goals and an impressive nine assists.

It’s thought the Toffees will demand a fee in the region of £35m were they to allow the youngster to leave Goodison Park this summer.

When you consider the fact that Spurs have spent almost 10 times that amount in the last five years on new arrivals, you’d have to say Barkley would prove a steal.

What’s more, Everton may have already found Barkley’s replacement in Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson.

A lot could depend on whether the Swans avoud the drop. Do that, and it’ll be hard for the Toffees to convince the Welsh outfit to sell their prised asset. However, relegation for Swansea would make it unlikely they even had a say in the matter.

But what do fans think? Would Barkley be right for Spurs, and is £35m a reasonable asking price?
