We now know the four sides preparing to do battle in the Championship play-offs for a place in next year’s Premier League. The question is: who’ll come out on top?
Today we’re taking a look at Huddersfield Town and Sheffield Wednesday, assessing each side’s chances of progressing to the final. For one, it’ll present an opportunity to make history, while the other will be looking to get back to where they feel they belong…
Huddersfield Town – 3/1 to win the play-offs
Fans will have been hoping for automatic promotion for much of the season, as the Terriers have really held their own at the top end of the table. But they’ve stumbled at arguably the worst time in the season.
They lost their last two matches of the campaign against Birmingham City and Cardiff City respectively, conceding five goals in those two games without reply.
But it gets worse for David Wagner’s men. They won just two of their last seven matches of the season, picking up seven of a possible 21 points available to them in that time.
We’re not finished yet…
They’ll face Sheffield Wednesday across two legs in the play-off semis, and you’d have to go back to November 2013 to find the last time Huddersfield got the better of the Owls.
They’ve scored just two goals in 630 minutes against Wednesday, and the momentum is certainly with Carlos Carvahal’s men, as you’ll see below…
Sheffield Wednesday – 9/4 to win the play-offs
Wednesday have been there or there abouts all season, having quietly gone about their business. And lest we forget, this is a position they found themselves in last year.
They met Brighton & Hove Albion at this stage last campaign, winning 3-1 on aggregate having crept into sixth place last year despite dropping points in their final for fixtures of the 2015-16 season.
This time around they’re heading into the play-offs on the back of a run which has seen them win six of their last seven games.
The statistics actually prove Wednesday have been one of the standout sides of the division in 2017, picking up more points than Brighton, Reading and their semi-final opponents.
Their experience may play a huge part in this clash, while they’ll want to go one better than they managed last year after missing out on a place in the Premier League following a Wembley defeat to Hull City.
Both clubs will fancy their chances of progressing – but only one can do just that. So where’s your money going?
