Bookies forced to re-open Van Dijk market after Liverpool blunder

We’ve been forced to re-open the market for Virgil Van Dijk’s next club after talks with Liverpool collapsed.

This latest development comes after we’d suspended betting after a deal looked to have been in place between the Reds and Southampton.

But the Anfield outfit very publicly withdrew their interest, following Southampton’s reporting of them to the Premier League.

It all means that Pep Guardiola and Manchester City are now clear favourites for the Dutchman’s signature at 6/5.

Chelsea are next in the betting at 3/1 although a move anywhere else looks far less likely.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “Liverpool have missed out on a golden opportunity to sign one of the Premier League’s best centre-halves, and Pep’s men are poised to pounce on their blunder.”

Van Dijk is contracted to Southampton until 2022, and most estimates suggest they could cash in for £60m.

So if they do decide to sell, the Saints will make a handy windfall, having only spent £13m on the centre-half from Celtic two years ago.

Manchester United are 12/1, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid each 14/1, and Arsenal 16/1.
