Premier League newboys Huddersfield Town are set to smash their transfer record in the next few days.

That’s according to the press, who claim the Terriers are closing in on an £11.5m deal for Montpellier striker Steve Mounie.

The Yorkshire outfit’s current record signing stands at a comparatively tiny £1.87m for Christopher Schindler.

Signing Mounie would be a real statement from Huddersfield, with Leicester City, West Bromwich Albion and Fulham all interested.

But if his goals keep Huddersfield in the top-flight, then that fee will have repaid itself.

Mounie netted 14 times last season as Montpellier finished a steady if unspectacular sixteenth in Ligue 1.

But it was his seven goals in seven games in the early part of 2017 which really started drawing attention from clubs across the Channel.

And with the forward still only 22-years-old, he should get better yet in the years to come.

West Brom are still searching for a goalscorer, but it’s believed the Baggies have moved their attention to Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez.

And as for Leicester, well they already boast five first-team strikers, including Jamie Vardy and Islam Slimani.

And with Fulham still in the Championship, Huddersfield look the best bet for Mounie.

He’ll certainly be needed to produce the goods, with the Terriers 8/13 favourites to be relegated this season.
