ITV Racing Tips: Eminent is our pick for Derby success at Epsom

Epsom Derby odds

The waiting is nearly over and we’re all set for what’s set to be a cracking 238th Derby at Epsom Downs racecourse.

Even more so than the latest edition of the Oaks, this year’s Derby renewal has been the subject of so many opinions it’s tempting to back half a dozen horses for glory.

We’re not going to go that far but we do have our own take on the contest and the four other contests set to be shown by the ITV Racing cameras.

De Bruyne Horse duly got us off the mark on Oaks day while What About Carlo launched a late bid to grab us some place money in the penultimate race before the big one.

And then our man Frankie Dettori landed his fourth fillies’ Classic with Enable to really bring home the bacon!

But enough of all that. On with the next show…

NAP – Laugh Aloud – 14:35 Epsom

With Elbereth engaged in yesterday’s Coronation Cup the door looks open for Laugh Aloud to follow-up her cosy victory at Goodwood last time out.

The John Gosden-trained four-year-old made all in that Listed contest and if allowed to dictate again she’ll be extremely tough to beat.

The odds reflect that fact. And although the likes of the handily-named Epsom Icon, winner of this in 2016, can mount a challenge, we don’t think our selection will be for catching.

NB – Eminent – 16:30 Epsom

‘Eminent ready to spring a surprise in the Craven’ we said before that particular victory. And then ‘We’re sticking with 2000 Guineas hopeful Eminent’ before his unsuccessful tilt at the one mile Classic.

You certainly can’t fault our loyalty but don’t be fooled: our love for Eminent isn’t based on blind faith.

Martyn Meade’s charge never got the run he wanted last time out at HQ and was also tapped for toe.

But over an extra four furlongs we reckon he’ll stay on and reel in two beatable market leaders, as well as the rest of these latest rivals.

Lively Longshot – Kimberella – 15:45 Epsom

Talking of keeping the faith, Kimberella did the business for this column when tipped up on All-Weather Championships day.

And despite coming up short in the Palace House Stakes last time out we think Richard Fahey’s gelding has a lively chance now in lesser company.

He was actually a tad unfortunate not to win this last year and at the prices this seven-year-old is an attractive each-way proposition.
