Leicester, West Brom, Tottenham and Arsenal in for Man United’s Smalling

Published:

With the arrival of Victor Lindelof last week, Chris Smalling’s Manchester United future looks rather bleak.

But the England international is approaching his peak at 27-years-old, and shouldn’t be short of offers this summer.

And according to this weekend’s press, each of Leicester City, West Bromwich Albion, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal could make a move.

The Foxes need to find replacements for ageing duo Robert Huth and Wes Morgan.

They’re already spent £17m on Harry Maguire from Hull City, and the addition of Smalling would really give the former champions a platform to build upon.

But neither they nor West Brom can offer European football.

The Tottenham link certainly holds intrigue.

According to the Daily Mail, United may offer Smalling in exchange for Spurs’ Eric Dier.

The trouble is however, that Smalling would quickly become third-choice, behind Belgian duo Jan Verthonghen and Toby Alderweireld.

But it could be a good deal for Spurs, who would have quality cover as they embark on the Champions League next term.

As for Arsenal, we could write several articles on Arsene Wenger’s failed defensive purchases.

But the Frenchman needs to find a long-term replacement for Per Mertesacker.

Smalling would provide competition to Laurent Koscielny, and depth to a back-line which has seen Gabriel fail to impress on a regular basis.

The addition of the 27-year-old would also add experience which neither Rob Holding nor Calum Chambers can yet claim.
