Royal Ascot day 3 tips: Golden George can delight his backers again

Ladies Day, Gold Cup Day, call it what you like, we’re in for some more fascinating action when the third installment of this year’s Royal Ascot meeting unfolds.

Order Of St George takes top billing in the Ascot Gold Cup, with Aidan O’Brien’s returning hero aiming for back-to-back renewals and an eighth race success for his trainer.

Indeed, it could be another red letter day for the Ballydoyle camp with Alluringly a warm order for the supporting Ribblesdale Stakes.

Here are our tips for day three…

NAP – Order Of St George – 16:20 Royal Ascot

He’s many people’s idea of this week’s banker and we’re certainly in agreement that this is for Order Of St George to lose.

Last year’s winner looked as good as ever when winning the Saval Beg at Leopardstown and O’Brien can scoop an incredible eighth Gold Cup from the last 12 runnings.

Quite simply, he’s a course and distance winner, can act on fast ground and in the absence of Varzirabad the five-year-old is likely to prove far too good for the opposition.

The durable Henry II Stakes winner Big Orange should put up a fight while 2016 third Sheikhzayedroad isn’t without claims.

NB – Mori – 15:40 Royal Ascot

The Irish have dominated the Ribblesdale in recent years, taking four of the last five runnings.

However, the home team can fight back with the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Mori.

She was a ready winner of a Listed contest at Goodwood last time out and has done little wrong in her fledgling career.

And although she’s yet to tackle 1m4f we reckon this daughter of Frankel can make a successful step up in both trip and class.

Alluringly finished a decent third in the Oaks at Epsom but she’s only notched one win in five starts and could well be vulnerable to our progressive selection.

Lively Longshot – City Of Joy – 17:00 Royal Ascot

We’re sticking by Sir Michael and backing jockey Ryan Moore to further improve upon his decent record in the Britannia Handicap.

City Of Joy is a lively contender in a typically hot renewal, having won both of his races so far this season.

He’s also well drawn with eight of the last 11 winners coming from a double-figure stall while 10 of the last 14 winners carried 8-13 or less.

It’s all adding up to a big performance from a horse that’s still got more improvement left in him.
