Favourites’ success bodes well for top-quality Wimbledon finale

We’re well into the second round of Wimbledon 2017, and it’s a tournament which has been remarkably short on upsets thus far.

But that simply means were on course for a phenomenally strong second week in SW19.

Ahead of Thursday’s play, just two of the top 18 men’s seeds have been sent packing.

While that’s not necessarily a surprise, the fact that it’s a similar story in the Ladies’ event certainly is.

Just one of the top 14 seeds has been defeated in South West London so far.

So we should be able to sit back now and look forward to some cracking contests in the rounds to come.

World number one Angelique Kerber is on course to meet 2016 French Open champion Garbine Muguruza in round four, while Venus Williams could face 2014 Australian Open finalist Dominika Cibulkova at the same stage.

And in section eight of the Ladies’ draw, second seed Simona Halep should face either Heather Watson, or two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka.

In the men’s event we could be looking forward to Novak Djokovic facing Juan Martin del Potro in round three, with Marin Cilic versus Kei Nishikori a likely fourth round matchup.

And Andy Murray is on course for a reunion with 2013 semi-final opponent Jerzy Janowicz.

But before that the Scot must beat Italian Fabio Fognini.

We’re 1/16 that the world number one does just that, in what is the pair’s first grass meeting.
