Mahrez’s Arsenal odds drift as Roma court Leicester ace
Published:
He’s on the market and reportedly available for £40-50m, so why is Riyad Mahrez still at Leicester City?
The Algerian was arguably the most sought-after player 12 months ago, though the Foxes managed to tie him down to a new contract and keep him in the East Midlands.
A year on, it’s somewhat surprising to find things have gone a little quiet over the winger’s future.
And our latest odds are the strongest indicator that Mahrez isn’t courting quite the same attention as he was in 2016.
Arsenal, linked with the 26-year-old last year and this, had looked a shoo-in at 1/5, a price they remained for much of this summer.
But having signed Alexandre Lacazette for a club record fee, talk of Mahrez joining the Gunners has died down, and now they’re out at 4/7.
It’s believed Arsenal don’t quite share Leicester’s valuation.
And that’s where Roma could come in.
The Serie A giants have reportedly tabled an offer for the 2015-16 PFA Player of the Year, although the press differ over a price.
The Daily Mail are claiming a £29m fee, while the Express reckon it’s £48m.
Either way, the Italian heavyweights are now just 2/1 second favourites to land the Leicester star.
There could be value in that too, as the Roman outfit can offer Champions League football, whereas Arsenal cannot.
Our traders reckon it’s strictly a two-horse race however, with Chelsea and Monaco next up at 10s.
