The Formula One report card: Who’s hot and who’s not at half-time

We’re at the half-way stage of the 2017 Formula One season, so it’s time to look back over the campaign’s opening 10 races.

We certainly haven’t been lacking in drama, with four different winners across three teams making it the sport’s most competitive year since 2013, while all 10 teams have already scored points.

But who have been the standout men this season? And who is heading into the second-half needing to up their game?

So far so good

Lewis Hamilton

Barring a rare off-weekend in Russia, Lewis Hamilton has been reminding us all that he’s the quickest guy in the business with six pole positions and four wins this term.

Looks to have the title momentum over Sebastian Vettel now and was utterly sublime at Silverstone last time out.

Sebastian Vettel

It’s Sebastian Vettel’s third season at Ferrari, and the pressure is building for the pair to win a championship.

They enjoyed a great start to the campaign, but things have been a little tougher of late. Ferrari need to find a touch more performance, while Vettel needs to control his temper and keep a cool head in the coming months if he’s to best Hamilton.

Valtteri Bottas

Everyone expected Valtteri Bottas to do reasonably well as he took Nico Rosberg’s seat at Mercedes, but few would have foreseen the Finn being quite so impressive.

A pair of wins have come against massive pressure from Vettel, and at the half-way stage he’s managed to force himself into championship contention.

Esteban Ocon

Young Frenchman Esteban Ocon has exceeded all expectations since joining Force India this season, and only Hamilton and Vettel have picked up more than his nine points finishes this season.

Things are getting heated with team-mate Sergio Perez, and contact in Azerbaijan didn’t go down well, but on the whole Ocon has made a very positive impact.

Work to do

Kimi Raikkonen

It’s the same story every year, but once again Kimi Raikkonen needs to up his game.

Was strong at Silverstone but on the whole has been left lagging by team-mate Vettel, and that’s hindering Ferrari’s Constructors’ hopes. The Finn will be 38-years-old in October and has yet to win in his second stint with the Scuderia, while his German comrade has taken six victories.

Jolyon Palmer

Whichever way you look at it, and however many times his Renault has failed him, Jolyon Palmer has scored zero points to team-mate Nico Hulkenberg’s 26.

With continued rumours that the French squad are lining up Robert Kubica or Carlos Sainz to replace him, Palmer needs a good result as soon as possible.

Daniil Kvyat

You can’t argue with facts and Daniil Kvyat’s don’t look good. He’s never finished higher than ninth for Toro Rosso, while current team-mate Carlos Sainz has done so 13 times.

Throw in his clumsy incident in Austria which wiped out Fernando Alonso and Max Verstappen, then his smash with team-mate Sainz in Silverstone, and these are tough times for the Russian, with plenty of names in the frame to grab his drive.

Stoffel Vandoorne

It can’t be easy being team-mate to Fernando Alonso while driving one of the least competitive McLarens in history.

But that being said, Stoffel Vandoorne hasn’t exactly shone this term. Has failed to get on Alonso’s pace, and he crashed out of a points finish in Monte-Carlo. Has improved in recent races and needs to keep that momentum going.
