Old rivals Nadal and Federer favourites for a depleted US Open

| 23.08.2017

The final Tennis Slam of the year is upon us, and the US Open at Flushing Meadows promises to be a competitive and unpredictable affair.

The men’s event will be minus two-time winner Novak Djokovic and reigning champion Stan Wawrinka, while 2014 finalist Kei Nishikori is also absent.

Those three are all out injured, while major concerns remain over Andy Murray’s condition.

The Scot will head to Queens, New York, having been ousted as world number one.

That honour now goes to Rafael Nadal.

He and old foe Roger Federer have enjoyed a stunning renaissance this year, winning all three Slams and nine events in total between them in 2017.

The duo boast 34 Slam titles between them, and the odds suggest they’re the men to beat once again.

It’s a remarkable comeback from the duo, who have reached just one US Open final each since 2011.

Federer is the 6/4 favourite for a sixth US Open crown, and his first since 2008, while Nadal is 11/4 for a third title.

And with so many top-line competitors absent or struggling for form, the two legends of the game dominate the market.

Third-favourite goes to Alexander Zverev, with the young German a 7/1 shot for his first Slam.

He’s certainly in great form, having won five times on the ATP Tour this season, and claimed successive titles in Washington and Quebec earlier this month, defeating Federer to win the latter.

Murray, who hasn’t appeared in an event since Wimbledon, is fourth in the betting at 15/2.

The odds then drift to Nick Kyrgios at 14s, Grigor Dimitrov at 16/1 and 2014 champion Marin Cilic at 18/1.

And a few people will surely be backing 2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro, with the Argentine a 25/1 price.
