Rock-solid Kilmarnock defender is our SPFL Signing of the Week

After narrowly missing out on a top-half spot in last season’s Ladbrokes Premiership, Kilmarnock are aiming to bridge the gap this term, and boss Lee McCulloch has bolstered those hopes with another savvy signing in the form of Gordon Greer.
While on paper the signing of a 36-year-old might not appear the most inspiring buy, the veteran has actually enjoyed the finest form of his career since entering his fourth decade.
The towering centre-half was one of Brighton & Hove Albion’s top performers from 2010-2016, leading the Seagulls to promotion from League One, followed by a pair of finishes in the Championship play-off spots.
That form saw the defender make his debut for Scotland a few days before turning 33-years-old, and he’s now chalked up 11 outings for Gordon Strachan’s men.
Last season was a less favourable one for the centre-half, as his then-club Blackburn Rovers succumbed to a final-day relegation, but Greer acquitted himself well over the campaign – especially in the Lancashire club’s impressive FA Cup run.
No stranger to life at Rugby Park, the Glaswegian was a key cog in Killie’s side from 2003-2007, helping the Ayrshire club to successive top-six finishes in his last two seasons. But there’s reason to believe he’ll be even more important this time out.
A powerful, classy and composed presence at the heart of defence, the veteran’s reading of the game is also second-to-none.
Add to that the fact his experience can help up-and-coming Killie defenders like Calum Waters and Greg Taylor, and he looks like an ideal fit for McCulloch’s men.
Oh, and he hasn’t cost the club a penny in transfer fees. Not bad at all.
Kilmarnock begin their Premiership campaign against St Johnstone, with the hosts 33/20 to enjoy victory at Rugby Park.
Meanwhile, Killie can be backed for a top-six finish at odds of 7/2, while the most optimistic fans can back them in the Betting Without Celtic at 50/1.
