Liverpool fans have reacted with interest to Xabi Alonso’s announcement that he intends to make a start in management, having hung up his boots last year. And our traders reckon it’s just 16/5 that he becomes Reds boss at any point.

The Spaniard spent five years on Merseyside, and secured legendary status at Anfield by netting the equaliser in the club’s 2005 Champions League Final victory.

Our traders certainly aren’t ruling out a return to the North-West, as proved by the odds above. And ambitious fans of Jurgen Klopp’s side can back him at 28/1 to one day lift the Premier League title as Liverpool boss.

Meanwhile, there are odds of 66/1 for him to be the German’s immediate replacement in the Anfield dugout. It’s also 40/1 for the former Real Madrid ace to manage any Premier League club in the current campaign.

However, having helped Spain to World Cup glory in 2010, his destiny could lie in international management. There’s 5/1 about the 35-year-old managing La Furia Roja at any point.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “He hasn’t been out of the game for long but it looks like Alonso is itching to get back into football, and the Liverpool legend might well find himself in the Anfield dugout in the next few years if these odds are anything to go by.”
