Champions League: Our best bets for British sides on Tuesday

Europe’s best players and teams will be in action this week as the Champions League returns for another season.

Given their wealth, Premier League clubs have done poorly in the competition in recent years. Only two English sides have reached the semi-finals in the last five seasons.

North of the border, Celtic haven’t got past the group stage in European competition since 2007-08.

There’s hope that things will improve this year. There are six British sides in the Champions League group stage.

And here are our top tips for the three sides in action on Tuesday:

Celtic v Paris Saint-Germain

Celtic have an impressive home record but they’ll be up against it when Les Parisiens visit.

PSG are 2/9 favourites following the arrivals of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Dani Alves.

Celtic are underdogs but both teams are strong going forward. The Bhoys have 12 goals in league action this season. PSG have got 19 in five Ligue 1 outings.

You can back PSG to win and Both Teams to Score at 33/20.

Chelsea v Qarabag

Antonio Conte takes charge of Chelsea in a Champions League game for the first time against Qarabag. The Azerbaijani side are making their debut in the group stage.

This should be a routine victory and the Blues are 1/9 to win. They face Arsenal at the weekend and Conte could rest a few regulars here to prepare.

Whatever team he puts out, Chelsea should win this comfortably. Get a Chelsea win and Over 3.5 Goals at 13/10.

Michy Batshuayi could benefit from rotation and make a rare start. The striker is 14/5 to Score 2 Goals or More.

Manchester United v FC Basel

Manchester United lost 2-1 to Basel when the two sides last met in 2011. That shock result saw United knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage.

Jose Mourinho will want to ensure there aren’t any surprises on the club’s return to the competition.

He’s likely to call for a controlled performance. That means Manchester United to win and Under 2.5 Goals looks tempting at 12/5.

United’s big summer signing Romelu Lukaku will be making his first Champions League appearance since his days as a youngster at Anderlecht.

He’s got the quality to shine on the European stage. And we like Lukaku is 9/2 as First Goalscorer.
