How the bookies are calling Jorge Linares v Luke Campbell

Great Britain’s Luke Campbell takes on three-weight world champion Jorge Linares in Las Vegas in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The 2012 Olympic gold medallist will face a stern test against the WBA king who is regarded among the world’s pound for pound kings.

After tipping up the draw in the Golovkin v Alvarez fight at 22/1, we asked our boxing trader Tommy Young what we can expect from this one.

Ladbrokes News: Tommy, congrats on the GGG-Canelo prediction. Tell us a little bit about Linares-Campbell?

TY: Ha, yeah, I was chuffed with that one. Well, Campbell is crossing the pond for his first world title fight vs Venezuela’s Jorge Linares.

Linares will be familiar to British fight fans as the two-time conqueror of Anthony Crolla. Before that, he stopped Kevin Mitchell in the 10th round of a brutal fight at the 02.

LN: What can we expect from Campbell here?

TY: Credit to Campbell for taking a tough fight but I feel it is probably a bit too much for him.

Linares is now well established as one of the top lightweights in the world after impressive performances against Crolla.

Campbell, on the other hand, hasn’t really taken his amateur form into the pro ranks yet. His shock loss to Yvan Mendy in 2015 was a poor performance.

Since then though, he’s taken some decent scalps in world title challengers Argenis Mendez and Darleys Perez. However, he’s still not torn up any trees.

Mendez knocked Campbell down in the 2nd round of their fight and Perez had the better of the early exchanges before retiring hurt.

Linares is without a doubt better than both of those guys. I don’t think Campbell will be able to get away with starting slow against someone of Linares’ class.

LN: So basically you’re saying Campbell has no chance at all?

TY: It is definitely a big ask for him, but not an impossible one. Campbell does enjoy a slight height and reach advantage as well as being a southpaw.

Linares has a history of problems with southpaws.

In his 2011 bout with southpaw Antonio Demarco, he really struggled before finally being stopped in the 11th round with his face in a real mess.

If Campbell can keep Linares at a distance and avoid getting into a scrap he does have a chance of coming back with the belt.

LN: Finally, what are your predictions for the fight?

TY: Having said all that, I have to favour Linares and, in particular, Linares on points at 7/4.

The Venezuelan outclassed Crolla for all 12 rounds of both their fights.

However, he never really looked like stopping him apart from maybe the 11th round of the second fight so I think the KO price of even-money for this fight is pretty short.

At a slightly bigger price Linares to win after being knocked down at 11/2 – as happened in his fight with Kevin Mitchell – looks worth a try as well.
