The Premier League’s five English Golden Boy Nominees

The 2017 Golden Boy nominees were announced yesterday with a number of young English talents included on the list.

The award, run by Italian newspaper Tuttosport, is given to the most impressive footballer in Europe under the age of 21-years-old.

Rather than over the course of a season, the prize is related to performances over a calendar year. Had it been the former, a certain Kylian Mbappe would have run away with it.

However, a number of other prodigious youngsters have had a tremendous 2017. We run the rule over the Premier League’s five English inclusions.

Marcus Rashford

Arguably the English player with the greatest chance of winning, Rashford has been a revelation for Manchester United over the last 18 months.

The 19-year-old has managed ten goals for the Red Devils over the course of the year. The Wythenshawe ace has become an intrinsic part of Jose Mourinho’s vibrant new United side.

Rashford is definitely in with a chance and should be at least guaranteed a top-three spot.

Dominic Solanke

Solanke’s inclusion is a little more surprising given he has yet to score for his new club Liverpool.

However, the former Chelsea gem was busy winning the under-20 World Cup for England over the summer. Not content with the Golden Ball award, he also won player of the tournament.

Much is expected of the 20-year-old in the long-term, but this award will have come too soon for the Basingstoke boy.

Joe Gomez

Liverpool is the only club with two nominees on the list. Gomez has long been tipped for stardom but injuries have dealt him a cruel hand to date.

The ex-Charlton Athletic youngster plays in the Rio Ferdinand mould. Tall and athletic, the 20-year-old is excellent with the ball at his feet.

Equally comfortable at right-back, the Londoner should prove to be a huge talent at Anfield.

No defender has ever won this award, unfortunately. So we can probably rule Gomez out.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Everton’s prodigious young striker has the enviable record of being one of only three English players to score in a World Cup Final.

He joined Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters on that list by scoring the winner in this summer’s under-20 Final against Venezuela.

The 20-year-old, signed for £1.5m from Sheffield United back in August 2016, made his breakthrough back in March, scoring against Hull City.

The Sheffield-born youngster has made 18 appearances for the Toffees this year and should start in tonight’s Carabao Cup clash with Sunderland.

Kyle Walker-Peters

Another one of the under-20 World Cup winners, Walker-Peters is a product of the Tottenham Hotspur Academy.

The 20-year-old full-back only made his senior debut in August, starting the opener against Newcastle United.

The Londoner is a proper speed merchant and has the ability to defend and attack with equal quality.

The Spurs production line keeps on producing the goods.
