Everton boss Ronald Koeman could turn to a familiar face in a bid to strengthen his defence, according to our odds.

The under-fire Blues chief is reportedly set to swoop for out of favour Barcelona centre-half Thomas Vermaelen.

As a result, we’ve priced the Belgian up at 7/4 for a shock move to Goodison Park.

Vermaelen has publicly backed his former Ajax boss to succeed at Everton, leading to speculation over the 6ft defender’s next destination.

A deal for the 31-year-old ace could be struck in January 2018, but will that come too late for Koeman?

The ex-Ajax chief is the 4/7 favourite to be the next manager to leave his post.

If you think the Blues board will pull the trigger even sooner, he’s Evens to go before Christmas Day.

If Koeman does exit from Goodison Park then Vermaelen could look elsewhere for a move.

West Ham United are second favourites at 5/1, while the Belgian is 11/2 for a shock return to the Emirates Stadium with Arsenal.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “Koeman could do with a player like Vermaelen to shore things up at the back, and the fact the pair worked together at Ajax certainly strengthens Everton’s chances of signing the defender when the window opens again.”
