Is Groves v Eubank Jr the biggest British fight since Froch v Groves II?

| 18.10.2017

Anthony Joshua’s win over Wladimir Klitschko elevated the Watford-born heavyweight to global stardom in April. But it’s been a while since there was a genuine blockbuster all-British fight.

The wait could be over very soon.

George Groves’ win over Jamie Cox last weekend set up a massive World Boxing Super Series semi-final against Chris Eubank Jr early next year.

The stage is set for a titanic battle. A place in the final, Groves’ WBA super-middleweight world title and bragging rights will all be on the line. It could be the biggest British fight since Groves’ rematch against Carl Froch in 2014.

Groves has won 27 of his 30 fights. Eubank Jr has 26 wins from 27.

Our traders don’t think there’s much in this one. Groves is priced at even-money. Eubank Jr is odds-on at 5/6. The draw is 25/1.

It will be the first time the two have faced each other in a professional match. But they already know each other well.

Eubank Jr served as Groves’ sparring partner during his younger days, which adds even more spice.

The war of words has already begun.

Groves has called Eubank Jr “a performer first, a fighter second”.

Eubank Jr has said: “As far as I’m concerned, I’m the No.1 seed. I’m going to go in there and show where my confidence comes from.”

There could be a huge audience by the time the fight comes around.

There’s already talk of holding it in an outdoor stadium to maximise the live attendance. Stamford Bridge is one possibility, which would be particularly special for Groves, who is a lifelong Chelsea fan.

There has been talk of Groves retiring soon but this has the potential to be his defining fight.
