ATP World Tour Finals: Federer and Nadal to battle it out in London

The 2017 ATP Finals return to London on Sunday as eight of the world’s best male players slug it out on the court for a chance to win the £1.35m first prize.

With 2016 winner Andy Murray absent from the event, four-time ATP Finals runner-up and six-time champion Roger Federer will start the tournament as the 4/6 favourite.

In the twilight of his career, the Swiss star has enjoyed an incredible year.

Federer recaptured the Wimbledon title for the first time since 2012 and overcame Rafael Nadal in a five-set epic to land the Australian Open for the first time in seven years.

With such exceptional form this calendar year, can anyone topple tennis’ greatest star?

Well, you can bet that Nadal will have a good go at doing just that. His odds are enticing too, with our traders offering 4/1 on the 31-year-old triumphing in London.

The Spaniard won the French Open and US Open this term and is the number one ranked player in the world, largely thanks to further victories in China, Barcelona and Monte Carlo. He’s the form man, but can he stop Federer’s fairytale?

Representing the new breed is 20-year-old German star and 8/1 shot, Alexander Zverez.

It has been a breakthrough year for the youngster who first burst onto the scene in 2015. This season he’s won the Italian and Canadian Open alongside a trio of other impressive tournament successes.

Grigor Dimitrov comes next at 10/1. He’s ranked sixth for this event but has not won a premier tournament since August and comes into this somewhat out of form. His record against his competitors is also poor, which makes any serious tilt at the title look unlikely for Dimitrov.

Marin Cilic may have only won one competition this year but he has gone close in a host of others. He makes interesting each-way value at 12/1.

Then there’s a gap to David Goffin at 20/1. The Belgian ace has failed to progress past the semi-finals of a single ATP World Tour Masters event this season and is not fancied to do well at the O2.

Dominic Thiem and Jack Sock bring up the rear at 22/1. It’s the latter who makes appeal in terms of outright quality, but given the respective group draw of the duo, Thiem could turn out to offer more attractive value in the long run.
