Greyhound Tips: Bubbly Mccoy can shock Airmount Tess in St Leger

Perry Barr is the location tonight for one of greyhounds’ most prestigious races as the St Leger takes centre-stage.

In what is a tight-field, it’s Airmount Tess that is set to start as the 5/2 favourite.

And with good reason too. She was highly impressive in all three trial runs for tonight’s final and is the only runner to have clocked a time under 43 seconds on two occasions around Perry Barr.

Although more used to running in Ireland, she has adapted extremely well to the UK and is a deserved favourite for tonight’s final. Don’t worry if Gerald Kiely’s runner is behind going into the home straight either, she has an incredible stride that always ensures she has a chance.

Her main competition will come from Rubys Rascal, who is 11/4 second-favourite. He’s won three times out of five around this track but has failed to record a time better than the favourite on any of his trial runs.

That’s a worry, but one that can be discounted when you consider that trainer Mark Wallis has won the St Leger on four occasions, most recently last year with Ferryforth Fran.

However, we’re not convinced. And that’s why we like the look of Bubbly Mccoy at 7/2. He showed he has the quality when seeing off Airmount Tess in the third quarter-final.

And although trap three isn’t ideal for a dog whose last three wins have come out of trap two, we think he has an excellent chance of causing an upset this evening.

Keplar Nine comes next at 9/2 following a disappointing third in the second semi-final. He did succeed in the heats and quarter-finals though, and should not be dismissed on each-way terms for celebrated trainer Charlie Lister. Success in the Doncaster St Leger last month adds to his credentials.

Goldies Hotspur is an 8/1 chance to follow up her surprise semi-final victory with another shock success in the final. She defied odds of 6/1 just under a week ago to secure her spot this evening and has shown gradual progression in the timings which suggests she could run even better tonight.

Slippy Maska is a 14/1 shot and as such doesn’t warrant much attention in the markets. Like Goldies Hotspur, she has shown gradual improvement against the clock, although a trio of runner-up finishes in her trial runs doesn’t inspire confidence for a first win at Perry Barr for Harry Kemp’s runner.
